What does state law say about different types of public meetings?

What are the different types of meetings and why does it matter?

There are three types of meetings under the state law, and each have different requirements for notices and agendas depending on the type of meeting that is being held.

• "Regular meetings" are meetings that take place at a regularly occurring, pre-arranged time and day.  The City Council has established Tuesday as its regular meeting day, with meetings starting between 5:00 - 7:00PM, and the location of the meeting warned on the agenda.  Council meetings for the year ahead are posted on the City’s website.

• "Special meetings" are meetings that take place at any time or date outside of the "regular" meeting schedule.

• "Emergency meetings" may be held only when necessary to respond to an unforeseen occurrence or condition requiring immediate attention by the public body.

What are notice requirements for the different types of meetings?

Agendas must be posted at least 48 hours in advance of a regular meeting, and at least 24 hours in advance of a special meeting. There is no requirement in state law for an agenda for an emergency meeting.
