NEW Winter Parking Rules

Event Date: April 01, 2025
NEW Winter Parking Rules

NEW Winter Parking Rules in Effect beginning November 15, 2024

The City of Barre is rolling out a pilot program to reform the Winter Parking Ban.

BEFORE: NO PARKING on City streets or municipal parking lots from November 15 - April 1 from 1AM to 6AM.

NOW: Parking allowed on City streets or municipal lots UNLESS a winter parking emergency ban is issued by the City.  In that case, there will be NO PARKING between 1AM and 6AM on municipal lots until the ban is lifted.

PLEASE CLICK HERE for the Manager's presentation to the City Council about this plan.

WHY MAKE THIS CHANGE?

The prior Winter Parking Ban was too inefficient and challenging for residents without off-street parking.  They were not allowed to park on City streets or parking lots even during long stretches of fair weather.  This change will allow people to park close to home when there is no snow in the forecast.

WHERE CAN RESIDENTS PARK WHEN THE WINTER PARKING EMERGENCY BAN IS IN EFFECT?

The City will allow residents to park in the dirt parking lot of the BOR when there are winter parking emergency bans.  Residents may also still purchase overnight parking passes for designated spaces as they had in the past. Please check out the map below and instructions on where to park at the BOR when the ban is in effect.  Please note that long-term parking is not allowed at the BOR -- residents who park there must move their vehicles after the winter parking emergency ban is lifted.  Residents can also still purchase overnight parking permits for approved spots in City parking lots at the Clerk's office.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED ABOUT A WINTER PARKING EMERGENCY BAN?

The City will post the ban on its website, Facebook (@BarreCityVT), VT-Alert and through our new Barre City-specific notification system, ReGroup (sign-up instructions here). We will use the same methods to announce when the ban is over and when residents can resume parking on City streets and parking lots.  The City will also post messages on sign boards at major thoroughfares around the City.  If you do not have off-street parking, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO STAY INFORMED!

**VEHICLES TOWED TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMPLEX FOR WINTER PARKING BAN VIOLATIONS MUST BE RETRIEVED (with payment) WITHIN 72 HOURS OR THEY WILL BE REMOVED TO THE TOW COMPANY BUSINESS WHERE THEY MAY INCUR ADDITIONAL CHARGES**

DOES THIS APPLY TO ALL STREETS?

Generally, yes.  However some narrow streets still cannot have parking at all from November 15 - April 1 from 1AM to 6AM.  Those streets are highlighted in the map below and include: Spaulding Street, Mount Street, Glenwood Avenue, Elmore Street, Branch Street, Bugbee Avenue, Short Street, Laurel Street.  Residents of those streets without off-street parking may park on other City streets, and must move their cars off streets and municipal parking lots when a winter emergency parking ban is in effect.
